Something to get off my chest: those lines about friendship lasting forever that everyone quotes? I don’t think some people really get what it’s about. I mean, how long have you lived for that to have been proven true? What do you know aside from the fact that it seems right and ideal, and that it makes life sound like a lovely, scripted movie? People change and move on. That’s a sad reality; sometimes you just don’t fit anymore. Circumstances change and other things get in the way. It doesn’t mean that your relationship, experiences or emotions were any less genuine if you aren’t still buddies at age 93.
I feel a need to be accurate all the time, so I have a nasty preference of dense, formal diction that, though conveying my ideas with littlest possible deviance, tends to turn off casual readers. In fact, I’ve been warned often of ”pretentious grandiloquence” by my friends.
(yes, they actually…
Please don’t change too much. :( Your writing is amazing.
You really can’t please everyone. There are those who will appreciate the imagery and eloquence of your words, and there are those who either won’t want to or won’t be able to. To change your approach to a story, and alter your style and the way you paint your scenes, is like catering to the latter. It’s like a betrayal of your own creative ideas that you’re executing them in a less precise manner. The writing loses some of that sharp, defined touch and that artistry.
Like… for example. To me, an empire “conceived” conveyed a grander sense of achievement and it was a more dynamic, abstract description; fitting for a fairy tale. As well, the missing imagery of the “antecedent taint of sorrow perched upon the brow” saddened me a bit; because the metaphor was haunting, and quite beautiful. Used alongside the description of the “starlit wings of God”, I’m sure people would get it. D:
I’m not the best critic, for sure. Hah. But what I do know is that you can find the right audience without having to change your writing. (Mine is worse by miles. I have the bad habit of using needlessly convoluted and overly ornamental diction, which just serves no purpose. See, I did it again just now. So I understand the need to streamline and to simplify so that the message gets across. Annywayss…) The creation of art is for expression, but as much as your aim is to convey, it should also be for yourself, in order to develop and to grow and challenge yourself. When the latter begins to be overwhelmed, try your best to keep your artistic integrity, and nurture your passion instead of stifling it. Just my own two cents. For without your passion, what’s left to create?
Life Imitates Art of the Day: The offices of Portland-based lawyer Randal Acker happen to be housed inside a quaint 1894 Queen Anne Victorian surrounded by ongoing construction associated with Portland State University, so he did what anyone in a similar situation would do: He tied a bunch of balloon to the house a la the now-classic scene from Pixar’s Up.
To add to the realism, Acker’s “Figo House” was nearly seized by TriMet through eminent domain a few years back. “I told them that if I had to do eminent domain law for the next two years to save the house, I would do it,” Acker said. He organized a protest and managed to get TriMet to back down.
Everything is a Remix (Part 3)
HELL YES. Copying has such bad connotations, when everyone learns by doing so. >:( KSAFHaihcb.
